Muggers stabbed two employees of a distribution company and made off with Tk 9.82 lakh exploding crackers in the city’s Gulshan area yesterday.
The incident took place when Rafiqul Islam, 30, and Arman Majumder, 30, along with nine other staffers of Agrani Trading Corporation, went to deposit Tk 32.60 lakh at Gulshan-2 branch of Premier Bank at around 9:30am.
Although security guards and other people were there on the bank premises, no one went to their rescue.
Rafiqul and Arman were walking to the bank with bagfuls of money from their office housed in nearby Alam Market.
As they were few yards off the bank, two crackers exploded with a loud bang. Panicked, the Agrani Trading employees except the two managed to enter the bank building.
“Four people pounced on Rafiqul and Arman. In a flash, they stabbed the two, grabbed the money and ran off,” a footpath hawker, who witnessed the hold-up, told The Daily Star.
As the panic-stricken people ran for cover, the muggers sped away in a white private car.
“The whole incident took only three minutes,” said Emarat Hossain, distribution manager of Agrani Trading, a distributor of different products.
As Rafiqul and Arman were lying on the ground with a number of stab wounds, their colleagues came out of the bank and rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Locals said the gang was lying in wait in front of the bank.
Talking to reporters, police officials blamed the Agrani Trading authorities for not informing them prior to carrying such a huge amount of money.
“The mugging could have been averted had they sought security beforehand,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallik.
