Oriental Bank Scam – Fictitious accounts, unaccounted loans

With help from some high officials of Oriental Bank, a few unscrupulous persons using false identities obtained about Tk 300 crore in loans from the problem infested financial institution, reveals an investigation conducted by The Daily Star.Banking sources suspect many of these fictitious borrowers might be the bank's directors themselves. Besides, 'close friends' and business partners of the directors have borrowed heavily in excess of their limits.There are at least 100 cases of such fraudulent practice, banking sources said. Why should Rab, cops not protect arrested persons

The High Court (HC) yesterday issued a rule nisi on the government, police and Rab to explain why they should not be directed to ensure protection of the people arrested or detained in custody as per the law.An HC division bench passed the order following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) challenging the failure of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) to protect the lives of the arrestees or detainees in its custody.The respondents, who have been asked to reply within three weeks, are home secretary, inspector general of police, and director general of Rab, ... 100pc basic govt salary for non-govt teachers declared

The government yesterday announced 100 per cent basic government salary for the non-government teachers and staffs who had been observing agitation programmes keeping their high schools, colleges and madrasas under lock and key for about a month. The non-government teachers and staffs have so far received 90 per cent of the basic salaries from the government exchequer."Now the government will provide 100 per cent basic salary from the public coffers, which was the principal demand of the striking teachers," Education Minister Osman Farruk told a press briefing at the ministry.The announcement takes retrospective effect from July 1, the beginning of ... Updated voter list may contradict census report

The voter list is likely to have about nine crore people after being updated, while the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics' (BBS) latest census report shows 8.02 crore people as eligible for being registered as voters. Earlier, a draft voter list published by the Election Commission (EC) enlisting 9.13 crore voters triggered an enormous controversy in May this year because of an unusual rise in the number of voters on that list.The BBS report shows that the number of people of the voting age of 18 years and above should stand at a maximum of 8.02 crore if none of them ... Board dissolved, MD removed

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) finally dissolved the board of directors and removed the managing director of the Oriental Bank from office for a year yesterday for failure to run the bank. The central bank yesterday sent the order to the Oriental Bank's board of directors, saying that the decision has been taken to prevent unlawful activities and to safeguard the interest of the depositors.The members of the dissolved board and the managing director, however, can appeal against the decision to the BB board.Top officials of different private commercial banks, however, were not happy with the central bank's action.They ... Latifur Rahman finally moves out of govt residence today

Former chief adviser to a caretaker government, Justice Latifur Rahman, finally moves out of a government residence today, which was allocated to him under 'special considerations' by the prime minister after his term in the interim government had ended over four and a half years back."Yes, I will leave the house tomorrow (Monday)," Latifur Rahman, also a former chief justice, told The Daily Star yesterday.
