3 killed in Rab crossfire

Three wanted criminals were killed in ‘crossfire’ between the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and the criminals in separate incidents in Chittagong, Kushtia and the capital early yesterday morning.

A wanted criminal of eight cases including a murder case - Rabiul alias Suraiyatta was killed in ‘crossfire’ between the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and his cohorts in Boalkhali upazila early yesterday morning, reported our Chittagong University correspondent.

Earlier, a team of Rab 7 raided Rajakhali area under Bakalia police station on Friday night and apprehended Rabiul alias Suraiyatta, son of Shah Alam. He was brought for interrogation at Rab Headquarters at Patenga.

Following Rabiul’s statement, a Rab team took Rabiul along on another raid in Ghoshkhil area to capture his partners in crime and seize their firearms.

Rabiul’s accomplices opened fired on Rab as they reached the area and Rab returned fire.

Rabiul was caught in ‘crossfire’ while trying to flee Rab’s custody. Rab took him to a local health complex where the doctors-on-duty declared him dead, claimed Rab.

A pistol and four bullets were recovered from the spot, Rab said in a statement.

In Kushtia, an activist of the outlawed Biplobi Communist Party (BCP) and accused in three murder cases including an eight-murder case Abdur Rahim alias Gopal was killed in ‘crossfire’ between Rab and his cohorts at Machpara under sadar upazila.

Earlier, a team of Rab 6 raided Farmpara area under sadar upazila of Chuadanga Friday morning and apprehended Gopal, a close aide to notorious criminal Aslam, reported our correspondent in Kushtia.

Following Gopal ’s statement, a Rab team took him along to Machpara to capture his fellow activists and seize their firearms.

Gopal ’s accomplices opened fire on Rab as they reached the area, inviting retaliatory fire. Gopal was caught in ‘crossfire’ while trying to flee Rab’s custody.

Rab recovered a firearm and three bullets from the spot, Rab claimed in a statement.

The third incident was in Tejgaon industrial area in the capital where an accused of many criminal cases including eight murder cases Masud Rana alias Killer Joy was killed in Rab ‘crossfire’, reported our staff correspondent in Dhaka.

Masud Rana and his accomplices ‘opened fire’ on Rab during Rab’s raid in the Commissioner Bazar area in Tejgaon and forced Rab to ‘return fire’ in defence.

Rana was caught in ‘crossfire’ and sustained injuries while other members of the gang managed to flee. Rana succumbed to his injuries after he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, claimed Rab in a statement.
