A Jatiya Party (Ershad) presidium member yesterday met Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and handed over a list of names of 50 persons seeking nominations in the next parliament election. In another move Ershad dissolved the post of his political adviser and the entire central committee of JP’s student front Jatiya Chhatra Samaj.
Sources said JP leader Roushan Ershad met the prime minister to discuss about the cases filed against the deposed dictator HM Ershad, and the easiest way to dispose of those cases. The judgement in a case against Ershad is scheduled to be pronounced on August 17.

Roushan, wife of Ershad met the prime minister at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday afternoon and discussed the present political situation. Roushan told the prime minister that her party is eager to join the BNP-led alliance ahead of the next election, JP sources said.

Sources added that Roushan, also a presidium member of JP, demanded that the prime minister nominates at least 50 JP leaders as the ruling alliance candidates in the next election. The prime minister told Roushan that she will consider the demand at a proper time. The JP leader drew the prime minister’s attention to the cases filed against HM Ershad on charges of land grabbing and tax evasion. The judgment on the tax evasion case is likely to be pronounced on August 17.

Meanwhile, JP Chairman Ershad yesterday dissolved the post of his political adviser. On Sunday night his political adviser, Kazi Firoje Rashid, appeared on a TV talk show with Bidisha, former wife of Ershad. Within 12 hours of broadcasting of the programme, Ershad dissolved the post.

JP Secretary General ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader told The Daily Star that there is no provision for a post of party chairman’s political adviser in the party constitution. “The chairman can dissolve the post and he has done it in proper way,” he said.

“I wanted relief from the post much earlier,” Kazi Firoje Rashid told The Daily Star last night adding, “It was not a valid post according to the party’s constitution”.

Ershad also dissolved the central committee of his party’s student wing Jatiya Chhatra Samaj due to internal feuds.
