Bangladesh will have to beat archrivals India in their last group match to make sure they reach the semifinals of the 10th South Asian Games football competition.

Bangladesh wasted a few good chances to share points with Afghanistan in a goalless draw in yesterday’s first match here at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

With Group B yet to break out of the jinx of draws, all four teams were level on two points after Nepal rode on another late penalty to draw 1-1 with 10-man India in the second match of the day.

Nepal, who have scored twice and conceded as many goals, enjoy superior goal difference over Bangladesh and India have identical records of scoring one and conceding one. Afghanistan have yet to score in the competition.

Santosh Shahukhala, who converted a stoppage time penalty against Bangladesh to snatch a 1-1 draw, was the hero again as he kept cool from the 12-yard spot in the 77th minute to cancel India’s lead given by Soshil Kumar 14 minutes earlier.

The penalty was awarded when defender Gobin Singh handled the ball inside the area and was sent off for his second bookable offence.

Meanwhile, Bangladeshi shuttlers were eliminated from the quarterfinals in the singles and doubles events after winning all their first round games.

Coach Golam Aziz Jilani was still happy with the show as they managed to beat Nepal, who had beaten Bangladesh in the last edition in Islamabad in 2004.
