The community primary teachers who have been observing hunger strike at the Central Shaheed Minar demanding nationalisation of their jobs since August 6 will lay siege to the Prime Minister’s Office today.

The teachers under the banner of Bangladesh Community Primary Teachers’ Association submitted a memorandum to the finance minister instead of laying siege to the secretariat yesterday as it was a public holiday.

Meanwhile, the National Front of Teachers and Employees (NFTE), a platform of 11 organisations of teachers and employees of non-government high schools, colleges and madrasas, held a meeting at the Jatiya Press Club yesterday.

The NFTE leaders said at the meeting they are unable to deposit the tuition fees collected from students to the government fund as the money is spent to meet the expenditure of the institutes.

Following the month-long indefinite strike of the non-government teachers, the government on August 6 announced 100 per cent basic salary for them but asked to deposit the tuition fees to the government.

“We will deposit the tuition fees to the government fund if the government ensures providing the same house rent, medical allowance, retirement allowance, annual increment and other facilities enjoyed by the government teachers,” said Quazi Faruque, chief coordinator and convenor of the NFTE.
