Awami Swechchhasebak League called a half-day hartal for today in Mirpur in the capital protesting the killing of its leader Monir Hussain Monu on Tuesday.
Unknown assailants killed Monir, a former vice president of Swechchhasebak League’s ward-12 unit, while he was supervising a feast for the destitute marking the death anniversary of Bangabandhu at Mirpur on Tuesday.
Hundreds of people brought out a procession yesterday afternoon in Mirpur condemning the killing. The procession started from Monir’s residence and ended at Mirpur circle-1, where a protest rally was held stopping vehicular movements.
The protesters demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers.
They alleged that the government has failed to control law and order in Mirpur where criminal incidents continue to rise alarmingly. At least 10 businessmen of the area were murdered by extortionists in the last one year, they said.
Earlier, angry locals hearing the death news of Monir on Tuesday night vandalised a number of vehicles near Sony Cinema Hall.
Monir’s family filed a murder case against Shahadat, a listed criminal of Dhaka City who had been threatening Monir for toll for the last few weeks, and his gang.
Meanwhile, Jahanara Begum, arrested for her alleged involvement in the attack, was placed on a two-day remand by Mirpur police for interrogation.
The body of Monir has been kept in the mortuary of Birdem Hospital. He will be buried after his parents arrive from America, family sources said.
