Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina yesterday reiterated her accusation against late president Ziaur Rahman and Prime Minister Khaleda Zia that they had link to the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 in 1975.

She also harshly criticised the prime minister for celebrating August 15 as her birthday and alluded that the date might be false and an acknowledgement to the killers.

Hasina, also president of the main opposition Awami League (AL), was addressing the discussion marking National Mourning Day (August 15) organised by Peshajibi Samannoy Parishad, a platform for different professionals, in the auditorium of Institution of Diploma Engineers in the capital. Parishad Convener Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud chaired the discussion.

Hasina burst into tears while recalling her father, mother, brothers and other relatives who had been assassinated on August 15, 1975. She said the August 15 massacre dwarfs the massacre in Karbala.

The AL chief, who is the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu, said late president Ziaur Rahman allowed indemnity to the killers of Bangabandhu to save them, a stance his wife the prime minister is maintaining and for this reason she has chosen August 15 to celebrate her birthday.

The prime minister’s ‘patronisation of the killers’ raise questions about her respect for the country’s liberation war and the country itself, Hasina said.

She also said the prime minister is ruining the country’s economy while allowing her family to get rich.

The AL president lambasted late president Ziaur Rahman for bringing back anti-liberation war collaborators to the country and for giving them voting rights.

Severely criticising the present government for politicising all sectors, Hasina said the government appointed a large number of ‘unscrupulous ruling alliance people’ to different government posts and promoted them violating proper procedures. The four-party alliance government has been harassing government employees and officials by sacking them and by penalising them with OSDs (officer on special duty) without proper reasons, she said.

Journalist Obaidul Haque, Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud, Barrister Amir-Ul Islam, Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, Prof Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Dr Qamrul Ahsan Khan, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Dr Rashid-e-Mahbub, Altaf Mahmud, Chowdhury Khalequzzaman, Abdur Razzak, Prof Nurul Huda, Kazi Faruk Ahmed, also spoke.
