Bangladesh-India Joint Boundary Working Group (JBWC) will visit enclaves and territories in adverse possession in next one month and submit report to their respective governments, Indian Home Secretary VK Duggal said in Dhaka yesterday.
The JBWC met in Dhaka on July 16-17 and discussed the outstanding border issues that cause frequent skirmishes between BDR and BSF.
“India and Bangladesh were friends, are friends and must remain friends. We must work towards making the relationship more solid, more concrete so that the coming generation should not fault us on anything,” Duggal told reporters after courtesy calls on Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan and Foreign Secretary Hemayetuddin.
The Indian home secretary arrived in the capital yesterday to lead his country’s 18-member delegation to the 7th home secretary level meeting.
On Dhaka-Delhi relations, he said: “Probably we are in the transition, probably we are moving towards this. Objective is there, goal is there and the desire to achieve is there. (But) some perceptions have to be cleared and perhaps the transition has to be managed well.”
About the longstanding issues that frequently cause unpleasant situation along the border between the two close door neighbours, the Indian home secretary said: “Desire should be there to take a few steps forward in resolving the issues.”
He, however, said some steps have already been taken for resolving the outstanding problems. The Joint Boundary Working Group will be visiting the enclaves and lands in adverse possession in Bangladesh and India.
On terrorism, he said both the countries should have the resolve to control terrorism with all mite and jointly as “terrorism is nobody’s friend. Terrorists have no nationality.”
Duggal also made a courtesy call on State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and met Home Secretary Safar Raj Hossain.
The last home secretary-level talks were held in New Delhi on October 27-28 last year. The meeting agreed on coordinated efforts to stop smuggling of drugs, illegal arms and explosives, and providing consular access to detainees. Both countries also exchanged lists of top criminals.
