Opposition leader Sheikh Hasina yesterday apparently kicked off her election campaign, pledging a package of commitments that she said will be fulfilled if the 14-party opposition combine is voted to power.
Hasina, who has long been leading a movement for electoral reforms, held out the promises while addressing several wayside rallies at Sherpur of Bogra, Ghoraghat, Matibali Crossing and Gobindaganj in Dinajpur on her way to Phulbari.
She said if the 14-party alliance is voted to power in the next general elections, terrorism and corruption will be eliminated, prices of essentials brought down to people’s reach and rate of literacy increased.
“If you don’t want to buy rice at Tk 20 per kg, don’t vote for the BNP-Jamaat alliance. Vote for nouka (boat). We will restore peace in the country and its image abroad,” she told the gatherings.
The Awami League (AL) chief further blamed the alliance government for having used the arrested militants and their kingpins to meet its own political ends and now proceeding to hang them to hide the truth behind all the bomb attacks.
“The militants are not being allowed to talk as the BNP-Jamaat force doesn’t want to allow the people to know about the godfathers of the militants.”
She said, “The Khaleda-Nizami government has sensed their debacle in the next general elections and that is why they have joined their hands with autocrat Ershad.”
“BNP-Jamaat has taken away the symbol, Langal. Now there is no alternative but to vote for nouka (boat),” she said.
About 14-party’s reform proposals, Hasina said the proposals will have to be implemented, failing which the government cannot escape public wrath.
Meanwhile, the families of the six people who were killed in police-BDR firing at Phulbari called on Sheikh Hasina. She distributed Tk 20,000 to each of the families.
She also distributed money among those who were injured in the Phulbari incident
Sheikh Hasina was accompanied, among others, by AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil, JSD leader Hasanul Haque Inu, AL leader Mustafa Jalal Mahiuddin, Ganatantri Party leader Nurul Islam, Chhatra League President Mahmud Hasan Ripon and General Secretary Mufazzal Haider Chowdhury Ruton.
