Former chief election commissioner (CEC) Justice MA Rouf yesterday said the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat should be separated from the Prime Minister’s Office so that the EC can work “independently and neutrally”.
“If our EC becomes independent and self-reliant as in India and Sri Lanka, the election would be free and fair,” Justice Rouf said while briefing journalists after a meeting with the visiting European Union (EU) Observation Exploratory Mission.
EU mission member Hannah Robert inquired Justice Rouf, also president of Council for National Agenda (CNA), about how the EC and media role in election can be strengthened at the closed-door meeting at CNA office in Dhanmondi, sources said.
Robert, who refused to reveal any details of the meeting, told reporters, “We are gathering useful information about the next general election of Bangladesh…We are here as part of assessing Bangladesh’s pre-election environment.”
Former secretary Shah Abdul Hannan and National Press Institute President Sadek Khan, among others, were present at the meeting.
