Mobs beat three alleged criminals to death in separate incidents in Keraniganj and the city’s Ramna area yesterday.
At Khajurbagan Bastuhara slums in Keraniganj, locals captured three — Nadim, 35, Arif, 32 and Mainuddin, 30 — after chasing them for almost a kilometre.
The chase started on the other side of the Buriganga after the three had shot timber trader Dilip Pal Chowdhury, 50, inside his shop at Farashganj. As the timber shop employees shouted for help, people nearby rushed to the scene. But the gang fired on them, injuring at least four people there.
Later, while fleeing they shot six more people to clear their path. Among the injured was the man whose boat they used to ride across the river.
On capture, the mob battered them badly, leaving Nadim and Arif dead on the spot while Mainuddin was rescued and arrested by Keraniganj police.
Police and locals suspect the three were of the infamous Dakat Shahid gang who had demanded Tk 5 lakh toll from Dilip a few days back.
Four people went to the shop at around 2:00pm and asked for Dilip. “As Dilip gave his identity, two of the criminals drew their firearms and shot him six times,” Idris, who was inside the shop during the attack, told The Daily Star.
“The criminals were firing indiscriminately as a few hundred locals and policemen chased them through Farashganj Road,” said Monir Hossain who too was bullet-hit.
Locals and the police continued to chase them on boats and since they were catching up the criminals’ boat fast, one of the gangsters dived into the river. The police and locals were unable to find him.
People on the other side started chasing the remaining three after they had crossed the river, witnesses said.
Hemmed in by the mob at Khajurbagan Bastuhara slums, the three began firing again, injuring four more people.
Police recovered a pistol, a revolver and two bullets from their possession.
They said they are investigating whether Dilip had any business or rivalry with them.
Sub-inspector of Sutrapur Police Station Rafiqul Islam said, “Initially, we are investigating whether it was a case of extortion, or Dilip’s personal animosities.”
In the city’s Ramna, a mob last evening beat a mugger to death.
The muggers shot three people to flee the scene.
The dead, aged around 30, could not be identified immediately.
Locals of Maghbazar area said they began to chase a group of muggers from Officers’ Club under Ramna Police Station area at about 7:00pm.
As the muggers came near Ladies Club, several pedestrians tried to catch them, but they opened fire leaving one Fazle, 25, an employee of the club, seriously injured.
The fleeing muggers then shot two security guards of Borak Tower– Benu Biswas, 45, and Guljar Ali, 48–on the Old Elephant Road.
The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Later the mob caught one mugger and beat him to death while the others managed to flee.
In Mirpur, locals beat up two more snatchers who earlier had left two shop employees bullet-hit.
The muggers tried to snatch money from employees of JBC Trade Line on Mirpur Mazar Road. The employees were on their way to deposit around Tk 29 lakh to a bank.
As the JBC staff resisted them, they shot and injured two — Kamrul Islam, 23, assistant storekeeper, and Mohammad Enamul, assistant accountant.
Later the staffers captured two muggers and beat them badly before handing them over to police. The muggers were identified as Babu, 35, and Mamun, 38.
