Doctors at Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka yesterday stated that the condition of former National University (NU) vice chancellor (VC) Prof Aftab Ahmad is stable and he is out of danger.
However, police could not discover the motive or arrest anyone as of yesterday evening for shooting Prof Aftab, who is also a senior professor of political science at Dhaka University (DU).

Three unidentified assailants shot Aftab from very close range on Saturday after entering into his third-floor residence on Fuller Road beside the British Council on the DU campus that left him seriously wounded.

He was rushed to Samorita Hospital with two bullets in chest and hip, where the doctors stated his condition to be critical. Aftab was shifted to the CMH as his condition deteriorated.

His wife Noorjahan Aftab filed a case against three unidentified people with Shahbagh Police Station.

Meanwhile, DU VC Prof SMA Faiz told journalists yesterday that eight check-posts would be set up on different entrance points to the campus, adding that five police cars and several police motorbikes would also patrol the varsity area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Mizanur Rahman visited DU campus and pledged deployment of police on the campus and members of the Ansar Battalion at entrances to teachers’ quarters.

Talking to The Daily Star, Mohammad Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station said, “We are suspecting a quarter and investigating the matter,” he said without elaborating further.

Meanwhile, teachers of Political Science Department yesterday expressed their deep shock over the attack on their colleague and condemned the incident. They demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits and urged the university authorities to ensure security of all on the campus.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Social Welfare Minister Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid visited Prof Aftab at the CMH yesterday. They inquired about his health and assured the family members of best treatment for him.
