Two gangsters belonging to an organised group of violent criminals — the Hamidul-Rashidul group — were killed in a ’shootout’ between police and the gang at Milpara area early yesterday.
The dead were identified as Majid, 35, son of Shamsuddin of Berkalua in Kumarkhali upazila and Piplu, 32, son of Abu Bakar of Milpara area in Kushtia.
According to police, the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Majid and Piplu from Milpara area on Saturday after a gunfight with the Hamidul-Rashidul group.
A team of DB raided the Milpara area at around 2:50pm after a tipped off where the kingpin of the gang Hamidul was holding a secret meeting with his accomplices.
The gangsters opened fire on the police that sparked off a half-hour gunfight as the police called on them to surrender.
Police arrested Majid and Piplu while Hamidul and other members of the gang managed to flee, claimed police.
They confessed to their involvement with the gang and having firearms hidden throughout the area after the DB quizzed them.
A combined team of police and DB took Majid and Piplu along and headed out to arrest their accomplices and recover hidden firearms.
When the team reached Kashban area of Milpara at around 4:00am, Majid and Piplu’s cohorts started firing at the law enforcers and the law enforcers returned fire.
Majid and Piplu, both hand-cuffed, were caught in crossfire and injured severely as they tried to escape police custody during the shootout, claimed police.
The on-duty doctors declared both dead at around 5:00pm after they were taken to Kushtia General Hospital.
No firearm was recovered from the criminals.
Both criminals were accused in seven cases including two for murder.
In 2003, four police and three criminals of the gang were killed in a gunfight.
So far, a total of 111 alleged criminals, highest across the country, have been killed in Kushtia since June 2004.
