Police last night charged truncheons on demonstrators injuring at least 40 as the protesters demanding uninterrupted electricity attacked a Palli Bidyut office at Ati Bazar in Keraniganj, UNB reports.
Police said the protesters attacked the Palli Bidyut office around 7:00pm and shattered its windowpanes. They also vandalised a microbus and three motorbikes.
In a bid to bring the situation under control, police charged truncheons on the demonstrators that left at least 40 people injured. Of them, 10 were admitted to the local health complex.
Meanwhile, people of four localities in Kamrangirchar in the city, infuriated by power cuts, attacked a police post and vandalised a police van last evening, our staff correspondent reports.
Keraniganj police said they barricaded a procession in the evening near Madbar Bazar Police Box. They said locals of Baragram, Madbar Bazar, Ashrafabad and Signboard were marching towards Baragram Palli Bidyut office to protest as there was no power in their areas for two days straight.
Unable to reach the power office, the demonstrators started hurling brickbats at the police box. The unruly people shattered the windows of a police van parked near the police box.
Local sources said a few policemen suffered minor injuries in the attack. However, police claimed none of their members were injured.
Police charged truncheons to disperse the demonstrators, which led to chases and counter chases between them.
