Alert call ahead of power handover

The government has directed the police administration to take a 'foolproof' security measure in the capital as it fears a severe downtrend in law and order during handover of power or soon after the caretaker government takes over.The government has even asked the police authorities to reinforce their presence in Dhaka by dispatching forces to the capital from across the country.The government is acting to this end when the 14-party opposition combine is preparing for a massive street showdown to protest against handover of power to Justice KM Hasan-led caretaker government, sources said.The home ministry has already sent massages all ... On the eve of the Eid-ul-Fitr, thousands of city dwellers craving to celebrate the greatest religious festival of the Muslims with their near and dear ones at their village homes are getting frustrated due to non-availability of advance tickets of inter-district buses, launches and trains.Many of the sufferers yesterday alleged massive scalping of tickets by a net work of people in the transport sector and black marketeers. Pubali Bank: 37pc classified loans in 20 top borrowers’ pocket

The top 20 defaulters of Pubali Bank, including a former Bangladesh Bank (BB) official, owe 37 per cent of the bank's total classified loans.Of this amount, 65 per cent lie with only four defaulters that include two government organisations, which took the loans during the 1980s when the bank was run by the government.The total classified loan of Pubali Bank up to June 30, 2006 is Tk 414 crore which is 12 per cent of the bank's total outstanding loan.The top 20 defaulters owe the bank Tk 152 crore and the 20th defaulter on this list, Shahidullah Shyamal & Co, ... Printing of voter list unlikely before Dec

Printing of the updated voter list before announcement of the next parliamentary election schedule in late November has become uncertain while the vendors said the massive task cannot be completed before December.The Election Commission (EC) Secretariat planned to complete the printing task by November 18 and the EC will announce the schedule for the ninth parliamentary election at the end of that month.The EC did not provide the vendors with the task of printing as of yesterday.For the first time, the EC is facing such a situation whereas on earlier occasions it always had the voter list prepared a ... Home ministry sends Eid gifts to top cops

The home ministry has sent gifts to high officials of police all over the country on upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr at public expenses.Each gift-pack includes sari, punjabi, tupi, attar, and a few other items, said a police official upon receiving his gifts.The home ministry has sent the gifts to officials ranging from additional deputy commissioners (ADC) to inspectors general (IG) under Dhaka Metropolitan Police.Elsewhere, superintendents of police (SP) and officials bearing higher ranks were also on the ministry's list of gift recipients. Aug 17 Blasts: 2 JMB top shots in Ctg jailed for 20 years

A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced two Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants to 20 years' imprisonment in a case filed in connection with three bomb attacks in Chittagong last year. The convicts are JMB Chittagong division chief Javed Iqbal, 26, and Cox's Bazar area commander of JMB Naimuzzaman, 22, who carried out the attack on August 17, October 3 and November 29 that left two people including a policemen dead and many injured.Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Ekramul Haq Chowdhury handed down the verdict of the case filed under the Arms Act.The judge in the verdict said Javed was ... Two killed in “crossfire”

An outlaw and an alleged robber were killed in "crossfire" during shootouts between their accomplices and the law enforcers in Kushtia and Chittagong early yesterday.The dead are identified as Milon Hossain, 35, a member of the outlawed Biplobi Communist Party (BCP) and Abdus Salek, 42, leader of an organised gang of robbers.Our correspondent from Kushtia said that the police arrested Milon at his house in Dhalnagar village under Kumarkhali upazila on Tuesday morning.During interrogation at Kumarkhali Police Station, he confessed to having firearms hidden in different areas. Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) traded bullets for an hour across Samanta frontier of Mohespur upazila in Jhenidah yesterday after BSF killed a Bangladeshi farmer.Meanwhile, around 400 people of the village Katchuarputa have left their homes fearing further escalation of the gun battle.Sources said Khabir Uddin, 40, and his son Suman, 10, of village Katchuarputa were mowing their field around 10:00am when the BSF shot Khabir killing him on the spot.An hour later, BDR reached the spot and took position near the border when the exchange of fire began.
