Ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers may attend their office at the ministries today for the last workday although the five-year tenure of the present four-party coalition government is scheduled to complete on October 27.
After the October 23-25 Eid vacation, the ministers can attend the office only for a day, as October 27 is Friday, a weekly holiday.
But due to the political preoccupations and the preparation for power handover, it will be tough for the ministers to attend the office on Thursday, the last working day for the cabinet members.
Prime Minister Khaleda Zia will also attend her secretariat office today and address the secretaries for the last time, sources said.
The ministers have started shifting their household goods as part of preparation to leave their official residences before power handover to the caretaker government.
The rules, however, approve their stay at the official residence for a month after completion of the government’s tenure.
The ministers, who are also important leaders of the ruling BNP and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami, will remain busy to ensure their control of the streets during the power handover to face ‘possible unexpected situation created by the opposition’, sources said.
Most of the ministers will bid farewell to the officials and staffs at the ministries today, the last working day before the Eid vacation while the staff will arrange farewell programmes, sources said.
Commerce Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Dhaka city Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka, Education Minister M Osman Farruk, Industries Minister Motiur Rahman Nizami, Social Welfare Minister Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, and Housing and Works Minister Mirza Abbas have already left their official residence.
BNP Secretary General and LGRD Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and Health and Family Planning Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain shifted their household goods from the official residence. Agriculture Minister M K Anwar and Environment Minister Tariqul Islam will move their belongings after the Eid vacation.
State Minister for Sports Fazlur Rahman Patal, former state minister Anwarul Kabir Talukder, State Minister for power Ukil Abdus Sattar, and Deputy Minister Asadul Habib Dulu have also taken away their furniture and other household goods.
All the ministers will leave their official residence before October 27, sources said.
