A group of dissident leaders of ruling BNP is trying to create a common platform soon under the leadership of former president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and BNP Standing Committee Member Col (retd) Oli Ahmed.
Badruddoza Chowdhury, also Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB), and Oli have already agreed in principle to form a new political party, sources said, adding that they will clarify their positions on this soon.
Sources said primary discussion between the BDB and Oli has completed and they are now trying to persuade BNP leaders at the district levels to join them to form the party.
“Bikalpa Dhara President Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury is a very good person. He is my friend and a senior leader. I want to make our relation stronger,” Oli told reporters yesterday.
“I have talked to Badruddoza Chowdhury about the political situation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mahi B Chowdhury MP, organising secretary of BDB, said, “There are many good people in BNP and Oli Ahmed is one of them. He is a veteran freedom fighter and an honest person.”
In reply to a question, he said, “If senior leaders like Oli Ahmed join us, we could change the name of Bikalpa Dhara.”
Asked about the new party, Oli said nothing has been decided yet.
“But I am in pressure,” he said, adding, “I think a lot of honest and competent persons are there in BNP. There are also a lot of people who are not involved with any political party but want to fight against corruption.”
Sources said Oli has collected resignation letters from many district level BNP leaders who want to join him after the handover of power. Even a few incumbent lawmakers and some senior leaders of ruling BNP recently showed interest in joining him.
Oli will visit his constituency in Chittagong after the Eid.
A few ruling party lawmakers and leaders, who have been maintaining long-term communication with BDB, will also join formally with Badruddoza after power handover, sources said.
