Concerned about the security situation centring the next general elections, Hindu leaders yesterday warned of long march and Dhaka-siege programmes if repression of minority people occurs again as it happened during the previous parliamentary polls.
They expressed fear that the Hindu voters may again fall victim to torture by some vested quarters as they have been victimised in every pre- and post-election periods.
The leaders and activists of Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad, Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, Mahanagar Sarbojaneen Puja Committee, and Bangladesh Hindu Youth Welfare Foundation formed a human chain at Muktangan in the capital yesterday, protesting the capture of Sutrapur Madan-Mohan Temple by the local BNP ward commissioner.
“We are very much anxious about our security. Records show that some vested quarters in connivance with the main political parties tortured us and damaged our properties earlier centring the general elections,” said Nim Chandra Bhowmik, general secretary of Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad and senior vice-president of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad.
“The caretaker government also failed to provide sufficient security for us,” he added.
He alleged that similar incidents have already begun as cadres of a local BNP leader grabbed the Madan-Mohan Temple on Tuesday and beat up devotees.
He warned that Hindus from all districts will march towards the capital and besiege it if incidents of repression occur on the eve of the upcoming election.
Jayanta Sen Dipu, president of Mohanagar Sarbojaneen Puja Committee, said around 15 cadres of notorious Asad Bahini captured the Madan-Mohan Temple. The culprits claimed that Alamgir, brother of commissioner of ward-74 and local BNP Secretary General Kazi Abul Bashar, had sent them.
Biren Chandra Saha, Kajal Debnath, Jayanta Kumar Deb, Nirmal Chatterjee and Advocate Shyamal Debnath also spoke at the programme.
