Vowing to resist any elections with former chief justice KM Hasan as caretaker government chief, the AL today said it will lay siege to the capital and hold resistance programme in districts and upazilas on October 28, the day the caretaker government is supposed to take over.
“We will accept anybody except Hasan chosen according to constitutional provisions as caretaker government head,” Abdul Jalil, general secretary of the AL , said at a press briefing at the AL president’s Dhanmondi office today.
He was giving his reaction to BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan’s statement that Hasan will head the caretaker government.
“Mannan Bhuiyan has tried to confuse and trick the nation by giving out false statements,” he said. “There is still time to ditch Hasan and sit to discuss who will become the caretaker government.”
“We will resist all elections under Hasan.”
Earlier, Bhuiyan told Jalil that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) MA Aziz is the next choice if Hasan is to step down. But later Bhuiyan said he did not mention Aziz as an alternative.
Jalil today said Aziz does not qualify as the caretaker government head according to clauses 118 and 152 of the constitutional. These clauses mention that the post of the CEC is a constitutional one. A person holding such a post cannot hold another constitutional post such as the chief adviser to the caretaker government.
