The reform talks between the AL and BNP seem to have fallen apart after BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan today said former chief justice KM Hasan will be the head of the caretaker government and the BNP will not make any concession on the issue.
“The dialogue can continue on issues other than KM Hasan,” Bhuiyan told a press conference this afternoon. “But there cannot be any question on the issue of Hasan because it is a constitutional issue. He (Hasan) will take over according to the constitution.”
“We cannot let anyone create any scope for constitutional crisis,” Mannan added.
When asked why he had proposed the name of Chief Election Commissioner MA Aziz as the next choice for caretaker government head in case Hasan is to step down, Mannan said he did not mention Aziz as an alternative proposal.
Meantime, the AL is expected to give its reaction on Bhuiyan’s comments later in the evening. The Daily Star will post the comment as soon as it is available.
