President and Chief Adviser to the caretaker government Prof Iajuddin Ahmed directed security officials to beef up security measures to maintain law and order for holding free and fair elections.

The president gave the directives at a meeting with the top officials of police, BDR and intelligence agencies at Bangabhaban yesterday, reports BSS.

“Take stern actions against any attempt at creating law and order situation, no relaxation will be allowed on this question,” BSS quoted the president’s Press Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman Chowdhury.

Home Secretary Zahirul Islam, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khuda Bokhs Chowdhury, directors general of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), Coast Guard, Ansar and Village Defence Party, Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner attended the meeting.

IGP’S VIEWS EXCHANGE MEETING
Newly appointed IGP Khuda Bokhs yesterday said police will engage all its strength and perform duties fairly and impartially to hold the national elections.

The president and chief adviser to the caretaker government has already directed him regarding the matter, he said, adding, “I have also directed all my colleagues to play firm and bold roles and take whatever steps the law permits.”

Khuda Bokhs was talking to newsmen at a views exchange meeting at the police headquarters.

The programme was organised to take suggestions from the journalists on a five-member media cell to be formed at the police headquarters to make information available for the newsmen.

The caretaker government chief also ordered the police force to carry out their duties neutrally, professionally and boldly, the IGP said.

He, however, refused to elaborate on the meeting with the chief adviser and said Bangabhaban will inform the press of the matter.

He hoped that people will play active role from their respective positions as they played in the past to maintain law and order and hold a fair, peaceful and neutral election.

Avoiding direct answer to whether godfathers will be arrested, he said, “Godfather is not a legal term, we should rather call criminal. We will arrest the criminals which is a continuous process.”

Asked what steps he has taken as the IGP to prove that he is a neutral person when questions have raised concerning his ‘loyalty’ to a particular political party, the IGP showed apparent anger saying, “Is it a question at all?”

The IGP also avoided answering whether actions will be taken against policemen loyal to the former government.

When asked what steps have been taken to transfer the superintendents of police and officers-in-charge who were posted in ‘better’ positions and have allegation of partisan role, Khuda Bokhs said he knew nothing about it.

Asked whether ‘crossfire’ will continue during the rule of the interim government, the IGP did not reply and hurriedly ended the programme.
