Awami League President Sheikh Hasina yesterday said it would be a great mistake if President Iajuddin Ahmed considers himself as the chief of a presidential form of government after taking charge of the non-party caretaker government.
“If he [president] thinks it a presidential system of government, he will make a mistake as the constitution does not support this view. Constitutionally it is a non-party caretaker government,” Hasina said at a meeting with former members of different standing committees of the 8th parliament at her party office at Dhanmondi in the capital.

For three months, the president, who has become chief adviser to the caretaker government violating the constitution, should forget that he is a partisan president and as the chief of a non-party caretaker government, he has to perform his duties neutrally following the constitution, she said.

She urged ensuring an atmosphere to hold a free and fair election where people would cast their vote in a festive mood.

She demanded immediate exclusion of 1.4 crore fake voters and inclusion of genuine voters in the voter list.

Hasina, who is also a former prime minister, said they gave Iajuddin time to prove his neutrality and implement their demands for holding free and fair elections but he is not taking any effective step to this end.

Besides, the council of advisers could not take any effective steps as the president himself holds the charge of all vital ministries related to elections, administration and police, she observed.

The AL chief urged all to make the road, rail and waterway blockade programmes from November 12 to realise the 11-point demand to ensure creating an environment for holding free and fair elections after removal of CEC Justice Aziz and depoliticising the civil and police administration.

Hasina said her party would publish a white paper on corruption and irregularities of the previous BNP-Jamaat coalition government and separate papers on different ministry’s corruption.

The BNP-Jamaat alliance looted Tk 2,86,000 crore through illegal means and abuse of power and siphoned off thousands of crore taka abroad, she said, adding that the alliance wants to come back to power through using black money and rigging the next election.

She said if voted to power, she would enact laws to recover the ‘plundered’ money and spend it for the welfare of the people.

There were a number of allegations of corruption against many BNP ministers and lawmakers, but different standing committees neither investigated the corruption nor held meeting, Hasina said.

She demanded immediate arrest of those who were involved in criminal activities during the five years of the last BNP-Jamaat government.

Among others, former AL lawmakers Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Kazi Zafarullah, Mohammad Nasim, advocate Abdul Hamid, Abdus Shaheed, Farook Khan, Shajahan Khan, Asaduzzaman Noor, Dr Abdur Razzak, Abdul Hai, Panchanan Biswas and Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taj were present at the meeting.
