Bhuiyan criticises ’statement’ against verdict

BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan yesterday said issuing any statement against a verdict of the High Court (HC) is contempt of court.
He made the remarks while criticising Awami League-led 14-party alliance leaders for expressing sympathy to Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad following Thursday’s HC verdict that rejected Ershad’s appeal against a trial court’s verdict.

Bhuiyan said Awami League (AL) leaders criticised Ershad and called him “a thief” when he expressed his interest to join the four-party alliance but now they have no shortage of sympathy for Ershad.

Bhuiyan was addressing a discussion meeting organised by the BNP at Ramna Batamul in the capital to mark the National Victory Day.

“Ershad changed his mind several times in the last two months, so it’s not final, this is not the end,” he said on the issue of Ershad joining the 14-party alliance, adding that, the 14-party leaders should not be too happy about Ershad’s current intentions to join 14-party.

On the alleged political influence in the verdict against Ershad, Bhuiyan said, “How could BNP influence the High Court when we did not influence the court even when we were in power?”

Urging the AL-led 14-party to participate in the elections, Bhuiyan said, “Trust the people and participate in the elections as the people will decide who will rule the country.”

“There is no alternative to elections, if we all want to save democracy,” he added.

The BNP secretary general urged the leaders and activists of his party to continue their fight against people who are trying to destroy the image of the country.

He said a few people termed Bangladesh a failed state due to the militant attacks. India had a terrorist attack in its parliament and it is still dealing with terrorism, Pakistan is facing almost a civil war and Nepal is at war. So, if terrorism is used to determine if a state has failed or not then these countries have failed more as a state then we have, he added.

Blasting AL leaders, he said the AL government had Azizul Haque and Mufti Shahidul arrested and tried to accuse them of fundamentalism but now they are with the AL.

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the AL is involved in a conspiracy to foil the elections and destroy democracy.

KM Obaidur Rahman said all political parties should join the elections to ensure the continuity of the democratic process.

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Delwar Hossain, Vice-chairman Tariqul Islam, MK Anwar, Shahjahan Siraj and Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary General Ashraf Hossain and Mirza Abbas also spoke at the meeting.
