Some Jatiya Party (Ershad) central leaders, led by presidium member and former deputy prime minister Shah Moazzem Hossain, yesterday joined the BNP.
Other central leaders, who joined the BNP, are JP presidium members Syeda Razia Foez, Mansur Sarker and Ismail Hossain Bengal, and joint secretary general Khalilur Rahman Chowdhury.
On behalf of the newcomers, including some former MPs and several thousand JP activists, Shah Moazzem Hossain presented a bouquet to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at the joining ceremony at a playground close to Hawa Bhaban.
Addressing the function, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia cautioned that conspiracy is going on against BNP, its allies, election and the country. She urged the people to remain alert against the conspiracy to maintain peace, development and progress initiated by the immediate past coalition government.
“Many don’t want Bangladesh’s progress and advance. So, they are hatching conspiracy,” she said.
On Jatiya Party’s joining the 14-party combine, she said the party again and again has deviated from its ideology. “Now the party has no ideology of nationalism and Islamic values…it will gradually vanish.”
The BNP chairperson urged the party’s activists and supporters to work unitedly for the four-party-nominated candidates to win the election.
She asked her party men in Munshiganj district to work for Shah Moazzem to ensure his victory in the election from Sreenagar-Sirajdikhan constituency.
Former president and LDP chief B Chowdhury or his son Mahi B Chowdhury is likely to contest the polls from Sreenagar-Sirajdikhan constituency.
Shah Moazzem, an outspoken politician, told the function that he joined the BNP in protest against Ershad’s “deviation from party ideology”.
Razia Foez and Ismail Hossain Bengal and BNP leaders Nazmul Huda and Amanullah Aman also spoke at the function.
