BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan last night blamed the Awami League-led grand alliance for trying to show fresh excuses on Ershad issue to boycott or foil the January 22 general election.

He made the remark while welcoming Jatiya Party (Ershad) presidium member and former minister Mainuddin Bhuiyan of Narsingdi to the party at a function at Hawa Bhaban.

Mainuddin along with some central and local leaders formally joined the BNP by presenting a bouquet to the BNP secretary general.

Mannan Bhuiyan urged the grand alliance to participate in the upcoming polls, refraining from creating further “confusion and causing suffering to the people”.

He said the Election Commission has cancelled the nomination of JP chairman Ershad following the verdict of the High Court. Citing the law, he said if anybody is convicted for two years, he cannot contest the election.

The BNP leader said the 14-party combine is unhappy with the verdict, and if it has any argument against the verdict, it can appeal to higher court. “Without doing that the alliance is trying to carry out movement.”

Bhuiyan deplored that they are making all the institutions controversial for creating anarchy in the country.

“AL has become sure of defeat in the election after allocating 96 seats to its alliance partners,” he said. “Therefore, they do not want to go to the polls to save their faces.”
