Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad has said the upcoming general elections may not be held if the grand alliance’s demands are not met.
“A congenial atmosphere for holding a free and fair election is yet to be created. If the grand alliance’s demands are not implemented, the election may not be held,” Ershad told reporters after attending a press conference with AL President Sheikh Hasina at a city hotel yesterday.
The grand alliance’s demands include resignation of President Iajuddin Ahmed from the post of chief adviser, updating the voter list as per the high court verdict, and reform of the Election Commission.
Meanwhile, Badruddoza Chowdhury, president of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), a major ally of the AL-led grand alliance, said it depends on the chief adviser whether the election will be held or not.
“Iajuddin will have to meet the people’s demand for holding the next general election in a free and fair manner. This person will be held responsible if the election is not held,” he told newsmen.
The two former presidents were present at the press conference where AL President Sheikh Hasina announced fresh agitation programme.
