Awami League (AL) leaders last night described President Iajuddin Ahmed’s resignation from the post of chief adviser as a “delayed” but “necessary” step.

They said they will decide on their next move today.

On the other hand, a number of senior BNP leaders, when contacted, declined to make any comments on the latest developments.

“The president has at least realised what he needed to do even though it is delayed. Meanwhile, however, the country has suffered terribly,” AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil told The Daily Star last night.

“All we can do now is hope for the best,” Jalil, also coordinator of the AL-led 14-party alliance, added.

AL Presidium Member Tofail Ahmed told The Daily Star, “He [Iajuddin] had become the chief adviser unconstitutionally and the elections would never have been acceptable under him.”

He said, “Our stance and movement have been vindicated by his delayed admission that the voter list is incorrect, that he needs to postpone the elections, and that he should resign.

“We will decide on what to do tomorrow [today],” Tofail added.
