The European Union (EU) called upon the newly appointed chief adviser and his caretaker government to concentrate their efforts to create the conditions conducive to the holding of a credible democratic election in the country as soon as possible.
The EU made the call through a EU presidency declaration issued in Berlin and Brussels on Friday.
“The European Union is monitoring events in Bangladesh closely following the latest developments, including the decision by President Iajuddin Ahmed to impose a state of emergency and to relinquish his post as chief adviser in the caretaker government,” the EU press release said.
The EU also urged all election stakeholders to carry out their responsibilities to ensure national and international confidence in the democratic process of Bangladesh.
The EU underscored the need for a judicious approach by the chief adviser and his caretaker government to the present restrictions imposed on fundamental rights and media freedom.
It hailed the armed forces for playing a neutral role during the moment of crisis of the country and urged them to maintain it.
The EU also urged full restoration of civil and political rights to the people of Bangladesh at the earliest opportunity.
