Army personnel arrested five leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in the capital yesterday as elsewhere in the country 57 people were rounded up in the ongoing anti-crime drive.
Sources said the law enforcers also raided different places at Dhanmondi and Banani DOHS in the capital in their continued hunt for Giasuddin Al Mamun, business partner of BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman.
Local leaders of the BNP and Awami League (AL) and some union parishad (UP) chairmen are among the arrestees.
According to the home ministry, police and the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested 1,968 people including 27 fugitive convicts and 1,098 facing arrest warrants across the country in the 24 hours ending at 6:00am yesterday.
They also seized 15 firearms, six other weapons and 36 rounds of ammunition.
During the same period, members of the armed forces arrested 74 people.
DHAKA
At makeshift checkpoints across the city, the army personnel searched vehicles and pedestrians throughout the day.
They held former central committee member of JCD, student wing of the BNP, Abdul Mannan Farhad, former president of Sir AF Rahman Hall [of Dhaka University] unit JCD Mahbubul Alam Azam and city leader Murad Hossain Muhin at Gabtoli bus stand at around 9:
00am.
Following up leads obtained from the three, the troops later raided the houses of JCD central committee members Shamsuzzoha Sumon and Nuruzzaman Linkon at Azimpur and Mohakhali and picked them up, intelligence sources said.
Some 35 passports were seized during the raid, added the sources without saying whether those were fake.
The five who face charges of extortion, tender manipulation, drug and arms peddling in and around the Dhaka University campus are loyal to JCD General Secretary Shafiul Bari Babu, several leaders of the organisation told The Daily Star in return for anonymity.
CHITTAGONG
The army held 14 people including Hasan Murad, commissioner of ward No. 7 under Patiya municipality, and Nasir of Nakpara in Banshkhali upazila.
A single-barrel gun with two cartridges was recovered from Nasir’s possession.
Besides, they captured eight alleged criminals at Dohazari Bazar and three more at Rangunia, Raozan and Boalkhali upazilas.
COX’S BAZAR
The troops arrested Jan-e Alam, a listed criminal, with a pistol and two other firearms at Cox’s Bazar district headquarters.
They also held Ibrahim Dakat at Chakaria upazila.
HILL TRACTS
The army made two arrests at Madhyapara and Balaghata in Bandarban district and one at Kaptai upazila of Rangamati yesterday, sources said.
KHULNA
A team of troops and police arrested local Jubo Dal leader Alamgir Bepari and five of his associates in Khulna city yesterday morning.
General secretary of ward No. 21 Jubo Dal, Alamgir is accused of leading a syndicate that pilfers diesel and petrol across the district.
The forces recovered 43 barrels of diesel from Skidghat and Khulna Bazar area during the operation that started at 6:00am yesterday. The fuel was stolen from the store of Khulna Railway department.
Later, all the six arrestees were handed over to Khulna police.
SATKHIRA
Three people including district JCD General Secretary Obaidus Sultan Bablu and BNP worker Arzu were held by the army personnel in the early hours yesterday.
NETRAKONA
The joint forces held three persons including joint convener of district Jubo League Shamim Ahmed in Netrakona town early yesterday.
In different raids, they also picked up Sohelur Rahman Khan Suvra, son of ex-Netrakona pourasava chairman and district AL Vice-president Matiur Rahman Khan, and Abul Hashem, a listed criminal who was arrested with a revolver a year ago.
MUNSHIGANJ
The troops nabbed six men who were ‘preparing for a robbery’ and recovered two machetes, two knives and some other sharp weapons in Majhibari area at Tongibari upazila in the early hours yesterday.
The army personnel yesterday searched a motorcade of former deputy prime minister Shah Moazzem Hossain, who has recently joined the BNP, at Simpara Bazar in the district but did not find anything harmful.
They conducted the search in the afternoon when he, along with some other party leaders and activists, were returning from a wedding at Simpara of Srinagar upazila.
NARAYANGANJ
Members of Rab-11 last night arrested Golam Faruk Khokon, local BNP leader and Murapara union parishad chairman of Roopganj upazila, at his Darikandi residence. The Rab also searched his house.
CHANDPUR
Army and policemen hauled in 17 people including the chairman of Gondamara union parishad in the district yesterday.
TANGAIL
In a pre-dawn raid, the troops arrested three people including Jubo Dal leader Shafiqul Islam at Poura Market in the town.
