Awami League (AL) last night welcomed the speech of the chief adviser (CA) to the caretaker government (CG) and hoped that the CG headed by Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed will soon announce a date for holding the next parliamentary election.
Meanwhile, BNP refrained from giving any reaction last night but party leaders watched the CA’s speech on television. It will give its formal reaction today, according to party sources.
“Election is mandatory to keep continuity of democracy and the constitutional system of the country. We hope that the caretaker government will declare the election date as early as possible to reassure the nation,” AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil said in his immediate reaction following the CA’s speech to the nation.
Talking to The Daily Star last night Jalil, also coordinator of AL-led 14-party coalition, said their demonstrations over the last several months to protect the people’s right to vote and for a free and fair election was legitimised through the speech of the CA.
“Demonstrations of the grand alliance for a free and fair election have been legitimised through his [CA] speech,” Jalil said.
The AL leader thanked the CA and said the CA gave the speech to the nation realising the dire state of the country which has been plagued by severe corruption, looting of state wealth through artificial price hikes of essentials, severe power shortage and looting in the sector, political killings and lack of public safety over the last five years.
“We hope that he [CA] will firmly go ahead with implementing the pledges he made to the nation last night,” Jalil said adding that they had been demonstrating for all those. He said the nation will get a relief if his pledges are implemented.
Jalil demanded immediate arrest of criminals and corrupt persons. He also demanded proper investigation of all the killings and bomb attacks including the August 21st grenade attack on an AL rally, and the killings of AL lawmakers Ahsanullah Master and Shah AMS Kibria, and demanded trial of the perpetrators.
