Awami League (AL) yesterday welcomed the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and an election commissioner and hoped that the new officials will play a neutral role in holding a free and fair election.
AL also urged the caretaker government (CG) as well as the Election Commission (EC) to change all politically appointed EC officials from EC Secretariat to upazila level to make it a powerful, neutral and independent body.
“We welcome the appointments. We will comment about the new CEC and election commissioner only after observing their activities. But I think they will work neutrally so that they can hold a free and fair election,” AL acting General Secretary Obaidul Quader said.
Talking to The Daily Star, Quader said they think all the election related officials — from EC secretariat to upazila level — are appointed politically by the previous BNP-Jamaat government. “This CEC should remove all politically appointed officials,” said the AL leader.
He also urged the CG to take initiatives to hold election early after preparing an updated voter roll. The AL leader also said the CG should not take additional burden so that election is delayed.
“We will hail it if the caretaker government takes initiatives to keep the corrupt, black money holders, criminals and their godfathers out of elections through formulating rules,” added Quader.
