The army-led joint forces yesterday arrested former BNP lawmaker from Moulvibazar 4 (Srimangal and Kamalganj) Shafiqur Rahman after raiding his house at Boruna village in Srimangal.

Sources said Shafiqur, an elected member of parliament in 1996 general elections, was detained for his alleged abuse of power and for patronising criminals.

Detained former BNP lawmaker from Narayanganj 4 Mohammad Giasuddin was placed on a three-day remand in a money laundering case yesterday while detained CBA leader BM Bakir Hossain was sent to jail after a Dhaka court rejected his bail petition the same day.

Another detained former BNP lawmaker Salahuddin Ahmed was also sent to jail yesterday after police produced him before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on completion of a five-day remand.

Meanwhile, joint forces lodged eight cases against former deputy minister for food and rehabilitation Asadul Habib Dulu along with a few other BNP leaders during the last 24 ending yesterday afternoon on charge of misappropriating corrugated iron (CI) sheets and materials meant for government relief.

Former lawmaker Fazlul Haq Amini, chairman of a faction of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), his son Abul Farah and 24 others were sued for illegal possession of a house.

In the case filed with Lalbagh Police Station yesterday, Abdur Rashid, a resident of Bara Katra, alleged that Amini’s goons beat up his family members and drove them out of his house about three years ago. Amini had been illegally occupying the house ever since.

Meanwhile, the army-led joint forces recovered more CI sheets — mostly from the houses of BNP leaders during its countrywide drive yesterday.

The forces during its nationwide drive arrested 1,742 people on various charges and seized 21 firearms in 24 hours preceding 6:00am yesterday.

Our Correspondent in Narayanganj reports: Former BNP lawmaker from Narayanganj 4 Giasuddin was produced before a Narayanganj court amid tight security with a petition for a seven-day remand in a case filed on charge of possessing foreign currencies.

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) filed the case against Giasuddin, who surrendered before a court on Sunday, with Siddhirganj Police Station for illegal possession of foreign currencies on February 4.

Police sought the remand saying that Giasuddin needs to be quizzed as he abused power, grabbed lands and was involved in drug trading during the BNP-Jamaat rule. He had surrendered before a Narayanganj court on February 25 and was sent to jail.

Giasuddin’s lawyers, however, denied the charges brought against their client and said the cases were filed against Giasuddin to harass him politically.

After the hearing, the court granted a three-day remand and asked the authorities concerned to interrogate him carefully.

Our Court Correspondent adds: Sonali Bank trade union leader BM Bakir, whom Rab arrested on Monday, was sent to the Dhaka Central Jail with a petition of one-month detention.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mir Ali Reza issued the order and sent Bakir to jail after police produced him before his court yesterday.

In the forwarding report placed before the court, police said Bakir had made a huge amount of money through unbridled corruption. He created anarchy by his party thugs and was involved in activities against the state. As such, he should be confined to jail.

The defence lawyers submitted a petition seeking his bail and said that the charges brought against Bakir were false and fabricated.

After hearing both sides, the court ordered to send him to jail.

Our Gazipur correspondent adds: The army yesterday recovered 48 pieces of CI sheets and held local BNP leader and Jangolia Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Mofazzal Hossain, 38, from Kaliganj for his alleged involvement in misappropriating relief materials.

An army team yesterday raided the house of Belal and recovered the CI sheets from his house. Belal admitted during quizzing that Mofazzal sold the relief goods to him at Tk 12,000.

Sources said in 2005, local government ministry suspended Mofazzal for his criminal activities. He is said to have regained the office after former BNP lawmaker Fazlul Huq Milan intervened in the matter on his behalf.

Meanwhile, the army recovered a foreign revolver, two bullets, one pipe gun and Tk 80,000 in cash from the house of Asaduzzaman. The law enforcers held Mazharul Islam Suman, 19, and Iqbal Hossain, 37, in this connection.

Our Moulvibazar correspondent adds: Joint force in separate raids in Srimangal and Moulvibazar upazilas arrested eight people including former BNP lawmaker of Srimangal Shafiqur Rahman, general secretary of Srimangal BNP and principal of a madrasa.

Yakub Ali, general secretary of Srimangal upazila BNP, Monsur Bokth Choudhury, Srimangal Traders Association president, and Monjurul Haque Choudhury, principal of Moulvibazar Town Darul Ulum Title Madrasa are among the seven other arrestees.

Our Correspondent in Rangpur adds: Former deputy minister Asadul Habib Dulu was named the prime accused in one out of eight cases filed against him with a Lalmonirhat police station. He was named number two accused in rest of the cases.

Dulu remains on top of the list of accused in the case lodged by the joint forces on Monday night after they had recovered 76 CI sheets from BNP office of Kulaghat union unit under sadar upazila earlier. The law enforcers lodged seven more graft cases against him the same day.

Joint forces recovered a total of 507 pieces of CI sheets from a number of BNP leaders in Lalmonirhat sadar upazila during the last fifteen days and said Dulu directed the local administration to disburse the relief CI sheets to his party loyalists.

Our Meherpur Correspondent adds: Joint forces arrested Afroz Ahmed, private secretary of ex-BNP lawmaker from Meherpur 1 constituency Masud Arun, from his newly constructed multi-storeyed building in Meherpur town.

They also seized a passport and other important documents searching Afroz’s house.

Our correspondent in Netrakona reports: The joint forces recovered 69 pieces CI sheets meant for government relief from Mohanganj, Kendua and Khaliajuri upazilas late Monday night and arrested three people including two local BNP leaders.

The same day, the forces also arrested Abu Hanifa, former convenor of Khaliajuri upazila BNP and former chairman of Chakua UP in Khaliajuri upazila. He is accused in a murder case.

Meanwhile, the law enforcers raided the house of Habibur Rahman, a leader of Mohanganj upazila BNP, and recovered 40 pieces of CI sheets. They also recovered 15 pieces of CI sheets from the house of local BNP leader Jantu Sarkar at Shyampur village in Khaliajuri upazila and 14 pieces from the business establishment of Abul Bashar in Kendua upazila.

Our Satkhira Correspondent adds: Police recovered 45 pieces of CI sheets of government relief fund from Assassuni and sadar upazilas of the district yesterday.

Twenty-three of the seized items were recovered from a shop owned by Bashir Gazi, a schoolteacher and a local BNP leader in the upazila, and 22 pieces were seized from a rickshaw van while being hauled to a safer place. The forces arrested Bashir Gazi.
