CU cancels certificates of Judge Faizee, 2,350 others

Chittagong University (CU) syndicate yesterday cancelled the LLB certificate of Judge Faisal Mahmud Faizee and 70 others on charge of tampering with their mark sheets, asking them to immediately return their certificates.A meeting of the university syndicate, which also cancelled the graduation certificate of around 2,350 examinees on the same offence, decided to refer the matter to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for taking necessary actions against the accused.Sources present at the meeting told The Daily Star that the syndicate also unanimously decided to lodge a case.The daylong 439th meeting of the syndicate was convened following submission of the report on ... Blindfolded, 2 Rab men gunned down

Unknown assailants shot dead two members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday at Amin Bazar on the outskirts of the capital in the first of such casualties from direct attacks on the elite force since its formation.The slain Rab men were identified as Deputy Assistant Director Humayun Kabir and Constable Phool Mia. Relief goods found at offices of Tariqul’s wife

Joint forces in Jessore recovered 103 corrugated iron (CI) sheets of state relief from different houses including the office of Astha, an NGO run by former BNP minister Tariqul Islam's wife Nargis Begum and local BNP leaders on Friday and Saturday.In the capital, police seized two vehicles including a luxurious one owned by BNP leader and influential DCC Ward Commissioner Chowdhury Alam.Besides, the joint forces raided former BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury's Dhanmondi residence last night. Passports of 200 more to be seized

The joint forces prepare to seize passports of at least 200 more individuals suspected of corruption and other criminal activities to prevent them from leaving the country, said sources.So far they have seized passports of 185 former ministers and lawmakers, politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen for alleged corruption and attempts to create anarchy. Seventy of them have already been detained. CMC fails to deliver, presses for $30m

While Chinese company CMC is mounting pressure on the government for immediate payment of about $30 million in cash and benefits for Barapukuria coal mine, the mine authorities' legal adviser has strongly opposed making such payment.The way CMC has failed to comply with its promises amounts to "criminal wrongdoing " and "fraud under the law of Bangladesh," he says.The Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Ltd's (BCMCL's) legal adviser has firmly objected to payment of $15 million sixth instalment of a Supplier's Credit to CMC because it has repeatedly failed to fulfil contractual obligations. Faizee should quit now, say jurists

Farmers block roads, besiege agri offices

Failing to get fertiliser in this peak season for IRRI-Boro cultivation, aggrieved farmers barricaded highways and laid siege to upazila agricultural offices in Dinajpur, Pabna and Barisal in the last two days. The prices of essentials have been on the rise for the past two weeks causing much suffering to the people of low and middle income groups.Rice, fish, meat, vegetables, milk powder, edible oil etc, which got very pricey on the eve of the last Eid ul Azha, have become even costlier during this period, the consumers and shopkeepers at different markets in the city said.Vegetable market saw the sharpest rise in price in the past two weeks. Ecnec sends back 7 projects for review

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) yesterday sent back seven projects including three power schemes.At a meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, it asked the ministries concerned to review the projects involving Tk 1,483 crore and place fresh proposals within a month.Especially the planning ministry officials were instructed to examine the projects closely before forwarding those to the Ecnec.
