Caged peacocks seized from Harris Chy’s house

A pair of peacocks were recovered yesterday evening from the residence of Harris Chowdhury, former political secretary to the immediate past prime minister Khaleda Zia, by forest department officials and the joint forces.
After being tipped off, the joint forces along with the forest department officials raided the Harris residence at House 6 on Road 53 of Gulshan 2 at around 6:00pm and found the peacocks confined in a cage on the ground floor of the two-storey building.

The birds were later taken to Dhaka Zoo in Mirpur.

Harris Chowdhury is one of the 50 corruption suspects listed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The officials found no one but two security guards at the house. The guards said that the peacocks had been there in the cage ever since they had started working at Harris residence about a year ago, police sources said.

According to the forest preservation act, rearing peacocks without due approval is a punishable offence. No case however was filed as of writing this report at 9:00pm yesterday.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court yesterday placed Harris’ chauffeur and his brother-in-law on a fresh remand of four days each.

On completion of their three-day remand, Harris’ chauffeur Abdus Salam and brother-in-law Mohammad Masum were produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Jagannath Das Khokan with a prayer for a fresh remand of seven days to interrogate them.

Last week on Wednesday, Rapid Action Battalion had seized a luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) owned by Harris Chowdhury and arrested his two brothers-in-law along with the driver of the car.

In yesterday’s forwarding report, the investigation officer of the case Sub-Inspector Mustaque Hossain of Dhanmondi Police Station said he gathered significant information about the seized car and needs to quiz both the arrestees further to know whereabouts of Harris and his associates.
