The caretaker government yesterday approved in principle a policy guideline for purchasing captive power as an urgent measure to meet the growing demand for electricity in the country.

A follow-up meeting of the council of advisers, chaired by Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed, also approved a draft guideline for remote area power supply system (Raps), a new recipe conceived under the national policy for providing electricity for every citizen by 2020.

The meeting also approved the Criminal Procedure Code (second amendment) Ordinance 2007 in compliance with the Supreme Court directives for separation of the judiciary from the executive.

Briefing newsmen about the outcome of the meeting, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim, said the council of advisers examined a feasibility study report of PricewaterhouseCoopers on captive power, which says about 600 megawatts of power can be received from captive power system.

The company submitted the report in 2005.

Replying to a question, the press secretary said the Power Development Board in the guideline proposed to buy electricity from captive power plants at the maximum rate of Tk 2.12 as per present gas price.

He said 18 captive power providers have expressed interest in providing power.
