The 87th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of the nation and architect of the country’s independence, will be observed today.

Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed will go to Tungipara today to visit the grave of Bangabandhu and offer prayers for the late national leader.

Bangabandhu’s lifelong struggle, sacrifice and gallant leadership led to the emergence of independent, sovereign Bangladesh on the world map.

The great leader was born on this day in 1920 in Tungipara of Gopalganj.

Bangabandhu became the father of the nation through his kindness to people, great political wisdom and sacrifice, Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina said in a message yesterday.

Recalling the brutal killing of Bangabandhu in 1975, she said the defeated forces in 1971 killed Bangabandhu at a time when he was beginning to free the country from economic dependencies.

AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil in a statement urged all the leaders and workers of the party and its front organisations to observe the day in a befitting manner.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President Hasanul Huq Inu and General Secretary Syed Jafar Sajjad in a statement yesterday paid tribute to the founder of the nation.

AL, its front organisations, and different socio-cultural groups have taken up programmes on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s birth anniversary.

However, the programmes have been kept short due to the state of emergency.

Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, Bangabandhur Janmadin Udjapan Committee, Bangabandhu Lalitakala Academy and Sonar Bangla Jubo Parishad will pay tributes to Bangabandhu by placing wreath on his portrait at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi in the capital.

A three-member delegation led by Sheikh Hasina’s Political Secretary Saber Hossain Chowdhury will visit Tungipara and lay wreaths on the grave of Bangabandhu today.
