Hundreds of farmers in 12 upazilas of the district are desperately in need of adequate supply of urea as a vast tract of boro cropland is still awaiting application of this fertiliser.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources in Bogra said three applications of urea is required during boro cultivation — two applications within a month of transplanting the seedlings. Out of around 1,90,000 hectares of land brought under boro cultivation in Bogra during this season, about 20,000 hectares of land is yet to receive the third application of urea.
Boro harvest will be affected if the ongoing scarcity of fertiliser continues, the DAE sources added.
A senior DAE official confirmed that the third phase of urea application is about to be over in seven days.
Abdul Awal, son of Ismail of Boro Kumira village in Bogra sadar upazila, said he had transplanted boro on around three bighas of land about a month ago, but he was able to apply urea only once as he received only one sack of urea during that time.
Nawab Ali, from Chhoto Kumira village of the same upazila, cultivated five bighas of land. He also has used urea only once.
Another farmer, Latif from Kalar Bari village in Gabtoli upazila, said he transplanted boro on about 3.5 bighas of land and he purchased urea on the black market at Ranirhat of Shahjahanpur upazila for Tk 350 - Tk 400 a sack.
He was unsuccessful to collect one more sack of fertiliser on Saturday from a fertiliser store at Borogola in Bogra town.
