Download PDF The High Court (HC) yesterday dismissed a writ petition challenging the validity of remand for BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman in connection with an extortion case filed against him.
On March 8, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, Dhaka, placed the BNP leader on a four-day remand in the case.
“The petition is not maintainable, as it does not come within the purview of public interest litigation (PIL), says the HC order.
After the expiry of a four-day remand on March 13, the remand for Tarique, the eldest son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, was challenged before the High Court.
Azizur Rahman Dulu, a lawyer, filed the writ petition as public interest litigation (PIL).
Tarique Rahman was arrested at his mother’s cantonment residence in connection with the extortion case at midnight on March 7.
