A statement in the name of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was faxed to newspaper offices yesterday while senior leaders of the party said they have no knowledge of the developments.

Sent from a Bangla national daily linked to BNP, the fax had the party letterhead but the signature in it was unclear.

When contacted last night, both BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and Joint Secretary General Nazrul Islam Khan said they were not aware of any such statement.

Usually, the statements by the BNP chairperson are undersigned by the party spokesperson, office secretary or assistant office secretary.
