A trader filed a compensation case against Tarique Rahman yesterday for 31 cattle that drowned over four years ago when the trawler carrying those capsized after Coco-3, a launch on Dhaka-Barisal route, hit it in midstream.

The same day an extortion case was filed against Tarique’s friend and business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun and six others while Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan (Shah Alam) was sued for land grabbing.

Our Narayanganj correspondent reports: Adam Ali, a cattle trader from Shahzadpur upazila of Sirajganj lodged the case against Tarique, the detained son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, with Keraniganj Police Station yesterday noon.

In the case statement, he said he was going to Fatullah with 44 head of cattle in a trawler from Sirajganj on February 6, 2003, a few days before Eid-ul-Azha. But the motorised boat sank in the Buriganga shortly after being rammed by Tarique’s Coco-3 at around 7:30pm.

He and the other people aboard were also injured in the incident.

The complainant said the livestock that went down were worth an estimated Tk 8 lakh. Fatullah police who had recovered 13 bodies filed a general diary (GD) but the accused managed to have the documents ‘vanished’, using political clout.

Adam Ali said he sent a letter to the launch owner, seeking compensation. Besides, the then chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority took him to Tarique’s office. There, Giasuddin Mamun, now behind bars, asked him to leave at once saying, “They have no time or money to show kindness.”

Later when he went there again, they threatened to kill him if he should continue to pursue the matter, the case statement says.

The complainant said he did not dare to file a case as they were in power then.

He said he has been out of his village for the last four years as he has no way to pay the cattle owners the amount he had promised for the beef herd.

His wife works as a domestic help and son pulls rickshaw while he has yet to come to grips with the loss, Adam added.

In the capital, a construction firm executive filed a case with the Dhanmondi Police Station, accusing Mamun and his six associates of extorting Tk 1.17 crore from him.

In the case, Khairul Bashar, managing director (admin) of Abdul Monayem Khan Ltd, said Mamun and his men collected the money from his office on CR Dutt Lane between May 16 and 24 last year.

The complainant mentioned that Mamun said his men would kill him if he fails to come up with the amount demanded.

The other accused are Obaidullah Khan Sohel, Kamruzzaman, Mahbub, ‘Mota’ Tareq, Hablu and Manik.

Meanwhile, Helena Begum, a lawyer from Khelbarirtek in Badda, filed the land-grab case against the Bashundhara Group chairman with the Badda Police Station yesterday afternoon.

The complainant said her husband Iqbal Mahmud bought a 12-katha land at Zoar Sahara on October 18, 2000 before he went abroad. On returning home in March last year, he found the Bashundhara Group building a housing estate there.
