About seven lakh of nearly 17 lakh students enrolled on classes between IX and XII in 2005–06 for SSC and HSC examinations in 2007 have dropped out, sources in the education board said.
‘We are surprised at the 39.65 per cent dropout in secondary and higher secondary level as against 33 per cent in primary schools,’ an education ministry official said.
The government annually spends more than Tk 600 crore as stipend for the students of primary schools and about Tk 200 crore for the students from Class VI to Class XII under female stipend projects, he said.
Under the nine education boards, 5,44,595 secondary students were identified as dropouts because they did not take the Secondary School Certificate examinations 2007.
Similarly, 131,139 higher secondary students were detected as dropouts because they had not completed registration for the Higher Secondary Certificate examinations 2007, the sources said.
In 2005-06 academic session, 11,57,923 students under nine education boards were enrolled on Class IX, but only 5,44,595 regular students completed registration for the SSC examinations 2007.
Likewise, 521,449 students admitted to higher secondary classes get themselves registered in 2005-06 academic session, but only 3,90,310 regular students are taking the HSC examinations 2007 scheduled to begin on May 10.
With 139,329 irregular students, the number of this year’s HSC examinees is 541,817.
‘It seemed to be unusual as the number of dropouts in an academic session is so high. The school and college authorities have been asked to explain the reasons,’ said Manirul Islam, the chairman of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka.
‘We have no statistics about the number of students dropped out in few years,’ he said, adding they will find it out and hold a meeting with the policymakers of the education ministry soon.
Explaining the reasons for a huge dropout, the principal of a Jhalakati college said there are a number of female students
who took admission to
higher secondary courses
}only to get the stipend, but they do not take the HSC examinations.
‘A large number of false students have been identified in stipend projects from primary to higher secondary level in recent months,’ a high official of stipend project said.
‘The authorities of some institutions do not allow the students who fail to come out successful in the tests to
take the final examinations as the government stops
salary subvention for the teachers of non-government
schools, colleges and madrassahs for bad results in the SSC and HSC exams,’ the headmaster of a non-government school said.
