Bangladesh Cricket Board is determined to continue the national cricket team’s progress with a high-profile overseas coach after the departure of Dav Whatmore. The BCB is all set launch an extensive search for a stand-out foreign trainer within a few days.
Whatmore, whose contact expires at the end of this month, agreed to extend his contract by one month to guide Bangladesh in their forthcoming series against India.
The 58-year-old Australian has been in charge of the Bangladesh cricket team for the last four years.
Mahbub Anam, the general secretary of the BCB, is upbeat about finding a replacement for Whatmore. ‘We will definitely go for an international coach and explore the available opportunities; we will make contacts privately and also evaluate the applications, if there be any, for the job,’ said Anam.
The BCB in fact has wide options ahead of them. A good numbers of coaches will be leaving their jobs after the World Cup cricket and others are available too. John Buchanan, the Australian coach, Tom Moody, the Aussie coach of Sri Lanka, former Indian coaches New Zealander John Wright and Australian Greg Chappell and Duncan Fletcher of Zimbabwe, who quit his England job a few days ago, are on the BCB’s priority list. The Board is also thinking of approaching former Aussie skipper Steve Waugh.
However, the major task of the new coach would be to continue the trend of improvement and form a team for the for 2011 World Cup.
Former national skipper Akram Khan has a different view. ‘The new coach will have the responsibility of forming a solid team for the 2011 World Cup. Whatmore has done some good job but I saw that he failed to form a competent team…even in the last match of the World Cup the batting order was shuffled,’ said Akram.
Aminul Islam Bulbul, the first Test centurion of the country, is unmoved by the departure of Whatmore. ‘He is leaving and another coach will be coming, I don’t know why he has been asked to oversee the Indian series. The important thing is to pick the right man and I doubt whether the committee formed by the BCB is capable enough to do the job,’ commented Bulbul.
‘Chalking out a pragmatic policy for the development of cricket is important and the board has to think who will be the fittest person for the purpose,’ added Bulbul.
Khaled Mahmud Sujon, another former national skipper, paid tribute to Whatmore. ‘Bangladesh have enjoyed tremendous success under the guidance of Whatmore and it is more than clear Bangladesh need a very active coach to
continue the tempo set by him. In my thoughts “active” has a very big meaning,’ said Mahmud.
