BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia met her eldest son Tarique Rahman at Kashimpur-2 prison in Gazipur on Saturday morning, intelligence sources and jail officials confirmed.
Tarique, facing extortion charges, was taken out of the Dhaka Central Jail secretly at around 6:00am and shifted to Gazipur prison.
Khaleda, who is under constant persuasion from the authorities to agree to go into exile, reached Kashimpur jail at around 7:00am and stayed with her son for about an hour and 45 minutes in presence of intelligence officials.
The immediate-past prime minister returned to her Dhaka Cantonment residence at about 9:00am.
‘They discussed family matters and political issues,’ a source in Khaleda’s family said.
The meeting was part of a reported deal reached between Khaleda and the influential authorities for sending her into exile by today.
A senior jail official at Kashimpur-2 jail told New Age Saturday night that Taqique was there and fine.
Inspector general of prison, brigadier general Md Zakir Hasan, however, claimed that Tarique was staying at Dhaka Central Jail.
‘The fact is that Tarique is in Dhaka Central Jail, not in CMH or in Kashimpur jail,’ the IG prison told New Age after he was reached over phone on Saturday afternoon.
Asked if Khaleda was allowed to meet Tarique at CHM or any other place at Dhaka cantonment, he said if she wanted to meet her son ‘she must come to the jail’.
New Age correspondent in Gazipur reported that Khaleda went to Kashimpur prison Saturday morning to meet her son.
Superintendent in-charge of Gazipur jail, Saifullah al-Mamun, however, told New Age that he had no idea about shifting Tarique to Kashipur jail or any meeting between Khaleda and Tarique there.
‘A convoy of four or five vehicles came to Kashimpur jail in the morning,’ local residents confirmed.
The authorities maintained total secrecy about the matter and were tight-lipped.
Sources said deputy inspector general of prison, major Shamsul Haider Siddiqui was at Kashimpur jail to supervise things till writing of this report at 9:00pm.
