3 killed, 160 hurt as storm lashes 6 dists

Three people were killed, 160 others injured and over 1800 houses damaged as nor’wester lashed six districts–Kushtia, Meherpur, Chuadanga, Rangpur, Kurigram and Brahmanbaria–yesterday.

Our Kushtia correspondent reported that the storm started lashing the three districts in the evening and lasted for 19 minutes, killing three people and injuring over 100 in Gangni and Mujibnagar upazilas of Meherpur and in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia.

The dead were identified as Nasrin, 13, of Baliaghat village under Gangni upazila and Maria, 32, of Munakhali village under Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur, and Azizul, 42, under Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia.

Of the injured, 30 were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital, while the rest given first aid.

Standing crops were damaged and a large number of trees uprooted by the storm in the three districts.

In Rangpur, the storm accompanied by heavy rain swept over Rangpur Sadar, Kounia and Gangachara upazilas at around 5:00am, damaging at least 1500 houses and injuring 50 people.

Standing Irri-boro crops on about 1000 hectares of land were also damaged by the twister, which continued only 10 minutes, according to our correspondent.

The injured were admitted to different hospitals and health complexes. In Gangachara upazila, five of the injured–Mahbub, Mahmuda, Rezia, Nesser Ali and Sadequl–were admitted to the upazila health complex. Their condition was stated to be critical.

The affected areas are Bhangagora, Araji Joydeb, Chhoto Rupai, Alemar Bazar, Tenpara, Banatari, Koipara, Babupara, Ghajghonta Bazar, Charchhalapak, Taluk Habu, Char Ichli, Buridangi, Kashir Char, and Joyram of Gangachara upazila; Choumohoni, Moynakutti of Rangpur Sadar upazila; Machhari, Udoy Narayan and Char Najirdah of Kounia upazila.

The massive damage occurred at Ghajghonta Bazaar where about 200 shops, a madrasa and a girls’ high school were damaged by the nor’wester.

The deputy commissioner visited the affected areas and sent a message to the ministry concerned seeking immediate relief for the storm-hit people.

Our Kurigram correspondent adds: Nor’wester lashed 19 villages under Chilmari and Roumari upazilas of the district at about 4:00pm.

At least 300 houses and two educational institutions were damaged and eight people injured by the storm that lasted for only seven minutes.

The affected villages are Bazra Diarkhata and Charuapara under Chelmari upazila, and pakhiura, Kazail Rata, Tintali, Baguan Char, Ganjanshara, banchar Char, Bala Mara, Ghugumari, Jigni Kanda, Tapurchar, Shaulmari Shonapur, Khodaimari, Fulurchar, Goaler Char, Baitkamari and Bandaber under Roumari, Upazila.

The injured are undergoing treatment at local hospitals.

In Brahmanbaria, nor’wester hit three villages under Sadar upazila in the afternoon, damaging at least 20 houses, our correspondent reports.

The affected villages are Sultanpur, Radhu and Ramrail. Standing crops were damaged while electric poles and trees uprooted by the storm.
