Former prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina finally returned home today.
Hasina flew in Zia International Airport by an Etihad Airways flight under a tight security at 4:45pm.
Senior leaders of the Awami League received her at the airport in a meticulously planned manner.
Since the state of emergency is in place, Awami League did not organise any official reception to greet her.
“Hundreds of riot police guarded the airport and the nearby streets to make sure no welcoming procession takes place violating the emergency rules,” says a firsthand report.
Hasina went to the United States on March 15 on a private tour. She was scheduled to return on April 23, but she got stranded in London on the way back to Dhaka following restrictions on her of flying home.
The caretaker administration put restrictions on her return on the plea that public safety, stability and national economy might be at stake if she was allowed to enter Bangladesh.
The government had instructed all international airlines not to carry her to Dhaka.
Hasina, the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was not issued boarding pass at London Heathrow Airport by the British Airways on April 23 in compliance with the edicts of Bangladesh authorities.
However, the caretaker government lifted the travel ban on April 25.
