The High Court (HC) today issued a rule and asked the government to explain why the attempt of the government to restrain the movement of BNP Chairperson and ex-premier Khaleda Zia should not be declared illegal.
The court also ordered the government to connect the telephone line of the former premier immediately after paying the due electric bill if any.
The court directive came after a primary hearing on the Supreme Court (SC) lawyer Abdul Wadud Khondkar’s writ petition on the unlawful house confinement of Khaleda, disconnecting his telephone line and putting pressure on her to go into exile.
On April 19, a habeas corpus petition was filed before the HC division bench comprising Justice MA Wahhab Mian and Justice Emdadul Haque challenging the reported confinement of Khaleda Zia at her house for indefinite period by the government without following any lawful procedure.
BNP National Executive Committee member Babul Chowdhury on April 22 filed the petition and sought a rule asking the government to explain why Khaleda should not be brought before the court to satisfy it that she was not being detained illegally.

Regardless of who, all citizens are equal and has inherent right to due process of law. Leaders , elected representatives must be transperent for their activities and present reports to their constituent. Sending leaders to exile is a bad idea. It not only degrade a leader, it undermine the true nation building moto. All corruption must be dealt with just law.
Intrim govt recognized the peril of the nation. They must be very careful not to abuse any power but to serve people with truth and dignity. It will be much worse before things get better.
