Some members of the BNP Standing Committee and a few important leaders of the party’s Dhaka city unit might be fired after withdrawal of ban on indoor politics, sources said.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has decided to bring changes in the party rank and file since she is unhappy with activities of senior leaders of the party, said a source who met her several times in the last few weeks.

“She is ready to bring changes in the party constitution to ensure democracy within the party. But before that is done, some important leaders of the party might be fired as she thinks they are playing a mysterious role to serve their own interests,” the source said.

Meanwhile, the persisting drama over Khaleda Zia’s trip to Singapore, postponed once again on Wednesday due to filing of an extortion case against her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko, has created confusion and frustration among party men. Many district level leaders contacted senior leaders of the party yesterday but failed to get satisfactory explanations on the matter, party insiders said.

Moreover, party leaders were surprised that the case against Koko was filed just a few hours before his scheduled departure for Singapore with his mother. The action was totally unexpected to them.

Asked about this, a senior BNP leader who was minister in the last five years yesterday said they had heard that Koko, picked up earlier, was freed following an understanding that Khaleda would leave the country for Saudi Arabia. But she changed her mind later and decided not to leave the country, which made the government angry.

Seeking anonymity, he said, “Madam (Khaleda) can go anywhere for treatment but she must return home. But the version that she will go to Singapore to keep Koko safe troubled her scheduled trip.”

One source said, the former prime minister is very angry with some party leaders who recently spoke against her through the media. These leaders might be relieved of their party posts. Some other leaders who have failed to perform their duties properly since the state of emergency was imposed might also be axed.

But Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, joint secretary general of the BNP, who met Khaleda and also talked to her over phone several times recently, told The Daily Star,” Madam will take proper decision on the much awaited reforms through discussions at all levels of the party.”

Sources said Khaleda hinted to Gayeshwar that he should get ready to take charge of Dhaka city unit of the party as city unit president Mayor Sadeque Hossian Khoka’s publice statement on the proposed reforms annoyed the party chairperson.

When contacted, Goyeshwar however said, “It is a rumour intended to create confusions within the party. ”

Party insiders said Khaleda Zia has expressed dissatisfaction over public statements of former finance minister M Saifur Rahman and Sadeque Hossain Khoka on the proposed reforms.

Both the leaders had however said reforms in the party would be implemented under the leadership of Khaleda Zia.

“Chairperson (Khaleda) has urged all not to make public their opinions about the party as all of them will get the chance to speak at party forums,” said Nazrul Islam Khan, joint secretary general of the party, at a press briefing on Tuesday. She will take decision on reforms when the government allows politics, Nazrul added.

Its about time BNP leader Khaleda Zia realized that the senior leaders are not loyal to its party, Such as former finance minister Saifur Rahman has showed the true colour of his role as BNP senior leader on the difficult times. Saifur Rahman widely known as great leader of BNP and corruption free but a greatest corrupted senior leader, who often blames others but kept his low profile when its come to his own back yard.
