Pro-reform leaders of BNP have almost finalised the proposal for intra-party reforms to drastically curb party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s power in taking decisions.

Party Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan is likely to announce the reform proposal for discussion within June 20, party sources said.

However, it is yet to be decided whether the reform proposal will be shown to Khaleda Zia for her opinion before its formal announcement.

Many leaders of the party, including a few former lawmakers from Bogra, home district of Tarique Rahman, son of Khaleda Zia, yesterday met Bhuiyan and expressed their support for the reform initiative.

Meanwhile, the BNP secretary general yesterday met party Standing Committee member M Saifur Rahman for discussion on the issue and the latter supported Bhuiyan’s stand on the reform.

“We want reforms to keep the party in progress and discussion is going on,” former whip in parliament Rezaul Bari Dina, who met Bhuiyan, told The Daily Star.

“We have discussed and finalised the reform proposal. I hope the secretary general will make an announcement on reform proposal within June 20,” former BNP lawmaker Abdul Alim told the reporters after his meeting with Bhuiyan.

“It seems an announcement on reforms will come soon. We cannot go backward and so the party constitution should be changed to reduce the absolute power of the party chairperson. I do not even want to see the same person in more than one post in the party,” Maj Gen (retd) ZA Khan, an adviser to the BNP Chairperson, said.

The proposal to make the party constitution ‘more democratic’ and ensure ‘democratic process’ in running the party has already been finalised and the leaders, who are with Mannan Bhuiyan over the reform issue, will urge the party chairperson to accept the proposals including expulsion of all the corrupt people from the party, party sources said.

“She [Khaleda Zia] must accept the proposals as the party leaders and workers want democracy and transparency in the party,” a senior leader said.

    M.Sohra’s Philosophy on Khaleda Zia,

“She should be out of cantonment and put in jail for life”

    1) Can you please confirm in what ground that your ideological thoughts, so sure to put her in jail?

    2) Under which democratic rights or process you practice to dismiss whole family out of BNP?

    3) Why not Sheikh Hasina, Ershad, Nizami and many other political leaders?

M.Sohra with due respect we all know that Bangladesh CT government has put big fish in the jail but none have yet found to be guilty of any crime until positive evidence. None of the political leaders claims they owned the country for business but every citizens of the country, has constitutionally, democratically rights to do politics long as not abusing the system. Wise politicians or political party chief’s automatically should step down in the interest of the party for future. As you are very much in support of the caretaker government, should advice CT gov to Shaw “Teeth” as they got the big fish behind bar or big question will arise amongst the people of Bangladesh and international community. Bangladesh political party’s needs reforms to guide line politicians democratically to prove its people for better govern.

Every individual has right to express freedom of speech or opinion but within the sense of humanity. Yes of course we wait n see what this government does with these political leaders, it is understandable while they were in! But I am confused with AL innocents leaders like Sheikh Helal and Abdul Jalil who weren’t even in power last five years, I suppose we wait n see what this CT gov explains the situation.
