The dissident leaders of BNP are holding backstage negotiations with their conformist counterparts in the party over the much-talked-about democratisation of the party.
BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan on Tuesday held an informal parley with party’s standing committee member Khandakar Mahbub Uddin Ahmed apparently in a bid to convince the latter, believed to be a conformist, of the need for bringing about reforms in the organisation.
Although some of the dissident leaders earlier said they would express their views on democratisation of the party through the press by today [Wednesday], Mannan Bhuiyan said he would not meet the media today.
‘I had a parley with Khandakar Mahbub Uddin Ahmed,’ the BNP secretary general said without giving any details.
Sources close to both of them said Mahbub Uddin Ahmed differed with Mannan Bhuiyan over a number of points including keeping the party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, out of the frame.
Mannan Bhuiyan also held talks with an influential backstage initiator of the process for democratisation of the two major political parties, Awami League and BNP. Details of their discussion were not available.
It is yet to be clear whether the dissidents in BNP would make public their views on reforms in BNP anytime soon. Mannan Bhuiyan told New Age, ‘I will not be available tomorrow [Wednesday]…’
Earlier, a number of dissident leaders including former lawmakers Abdul Alim and Sardar Shakhawat Hossain Bakul told the press that the ‘reformists’ of the party would place an outline for democratisation of the organisation by June 20.
Apart from holding a series of parleys, the BNP secretary general also visited the party’s central office at Nayapaltan in Dhaka Tuesday morning.
